About me

Teaching science with expertise, and with heart.

Hi, I’m Stuart. I’m the only tutor at Leap Learning — one person, one teaching space, no agency in between. After nearly 12 years as a classroom teacher and science lead, I set it up to give students the calm, focused attention that a class of thirty simply can’t.

For over a decade I taught Biology, Chemistry and Physics from Year 7 through to A-Level, and led a science department through curriculum changes, new specifications and more mock-exam seasons than I can count. I've marked thousands of papers, sat in hundreds of parents' evenings, and watched capable students lose marks not because they didn't understand, but because no one had shown them how to show it.

Along the way I learned something that shaped how I teach: the students who make the biggest leaps are rarely the ones who work the longest hours. They're the ones who feel safe enough to get things wrong, who have a clear plan, and who can see their own progress week by week.

That's what Leap Learning is built around. Small groups where every student is known. Sessions that are structured but never stressful. A plan that gets results without asking a fifteen-year-old to buckle under the strain.

I have significant experience supporting students with SEN, including dyslexia, ADHD and autism, as well as those experiencing exam-related anxiety. Adjustments are made quietly and without fuss, because every student deserves to feel that the room was designed with them in mind.

Teaching philosophy

Results that last, from students who still like science at the end

Four principles underpin every session, whether it's a Year 9 building foundations or a Year 13 chasing an A*.

Conceptual clarity

I teach the 'why' before the 'what'. Once a student sees how bonding links to properties, or how forces link to energy, whole topics click into place and stay there.

High-mark questions

The six-mark extended responses, required practical questions and calculations are where grades are won. We practise them deliberately, every week, until they feel routine.

Exam technique

Command words, timing, mark-scheme language and the confidence to attempt every question. Knowing the science is only half the job; showing it clearly is the other half.

Without the burnout

I understand how anxiety shows up in teenagers, and I plan around it. Sessions are structured, predictable and paced so students leave feeling capable, not drained.

Anxiety-aware & SEN-friendly

A plan that gets results, and a child who's still smiling

Exam pressure is real, and so is the toll it takes on teenagers. I build revision plans that are ambitious but humane: clear priorities, realistic weekly goals and regular check-ins so nothing snowballs. If your child has additional needs, tell me at the consultation and we'll shape the sessions around them from day one.
